Our goats are an integral part of our daily lives, and this includes our soap. We make all of our soap with goat milk and greater than 95% of our formulations are natural. What sets us apart from other brands is we have created a line of soaps to represent our animals. Each of our goats, as well as our other animals, has a soap named after them with a fragrance chosen to represent that animal's personality.
In addition to soap, we make other cosmetics, such as lotion, lip balm, and body scrub. We follow best manufacturing practices to produce a high quality, safe product. Since sustainability and environmental stewardship is important to us, our formulations are designed as solid products, to reduce plastic waste, improve product life, and reduce the use of fossil fuels over all.
Goat Milk Soap Goat milk soap is one of our primary products. The milk is sourced directly from our very own goats, allowing us to ensure humane care standards every step of the way. Remaining ingredients are made up of natural ingredients, such as vegetable oils and butters. The formulas are designed to offer different properties. Goat milk soap is beneficial over mass produced, "conventional" soap in that it is actually soap. Under FDA classification, soap must be saponified fats (from oils and butters). Saponification requires the use of lye (sodium hydroxide). Many "conventional" "soaps" are actually classified as "detergents" because they contain surfactants, not saponified fats. These detergents are not necessarily harmful (it depends on what surfactants and other ingredients are used), but they have different properties from real soap. Next time you're at a big chain store, browse the "soap" aisle and see how many products actually say "soap". Products labeled as "beauty bars", "body bars", or other names without actually saying "soap" are in fact detergent bars. When you find these, take a look at the ingredients, just for fun.
When many people think of lye soap, they often think of the old fashioned soap that burns your skin off. This can happen, but is due to an imbalance between lye and fats. Properly formulated soap will use the entirety of lye, resulting in a perfect safe, harmless cleansing bar. We measure all ingredients by weight, not cups and spoons, to ensure the proper ratio of ingredients as well as consistency in product. Our soaps are also super-fatted (excess fat content that is not saponified) by 5-7%, giving you a safe, gentle bar. These extra fats also offer additional properties, such as hydration and nourishment of the skin. The milk used in our formulas (instead of water) offers other benefits too. Milk contains fats, which add to the super-fat content of our soap. Milk also contains vitamins and minerals, which can be absorbed by your skin for further nourishment. We add sodium lactate, a natural salt, to our soap to help harden the bar (making it last longer) and for its humectant (moisturizing) properties. Sodium lactate and milk both contain alpha hydroxy acid, which is a natural chemical exfoliant. These AHA's help to break the bond between fresh new skin cells and old, dried, damaged skin cells on the surface, allowing those dead skin cells to be shed and washed away, leaving a glowing, young looking complexion. Our soap formulation is more than 90% natural ingredient. The only non-natural ingredients in our soap is colorants and fragrances. These are approved for use in cosmetics at safe levels, but are made in a laboratory. Our colorants are "like natural" micas, but are still made in a laboratory.
Some of our soap formulations are 100% natural. These either contain no colorants, or use natural pigments for coloration. Natural pigments include various clays as well as powdered plant material, such as turmeric or beet root. All of these ingredients are approved for use in cosmetics, and are safe for your skin. These ingredients may provide additional benefits to your skin, but we will not highlight those due to the great diversity and range available. In case of allergy or sensitivity, please check the ingredient lists closely, or contact us if you have concerns or questions. Fragrances in our natural formulations are achieved from essential oils instead of laboratory-made fragrance oils. Again, please check ingredient lists in case of allergies or sensitivities.
Lotion, Butter, and Balm Our lotions do not contain milk. This decision was made after extensive research on the subject. While a milk lotion can be made, it is tricky business since soap can not only go rancid, but also spoil. It requires the use of strong preservatives, and even then may not be safe under all conditions. This is not a risk we are willing to take. Instead of milk, our lotions are made using distilled water or flower waters (a natural source of fragrance).
Previously we offered liquid lotions, the traditional style most people are used to seeing on store shelves. At this time we are only offer liquid lotion on an as-requested basis, as long as supplies last. We are switching over to a solid lotion, which offers the same moisturizing and conditioning benefits, but in a different form. Solid lotion contains plant oils and butters, as well as waxes to produce moisturizing, skin softening, and conditioning benefits. There is no need for emulsifying ingredients, and because there's no water in the formula, we don't need to use preservatives. Another benefit to solid lotion is we can use biodegradable packaging, instead of plastic bottles! Our formulation is over 95% natural, with the only unnatural ingredients being fragrances and colorants. The colorants we use are micas, which are "like natural", though made in a laboratory.
While supplies last, we will continue to make butters and balms as requested. These are not solid formulations, and at this time must be packaged in plastic or glass. We are uncomfortable continuing to use these packaging materials, as they are less environmentally friendly than the alternatives used in our solid formulations.
Scrubs and Soaks Scrubs are used to provide physical exfoliation to the skin, which helps to loosen dead skin cells, leaving a brighter, smoother surface. Previously we formulated traditional loose scrubs and soaks, but now we are making solid scrubs and solid soaks. The use of solid product cuts back on environmental waste products, both in the production and disposal of plastics.
Our scrubs contain sugar as the main exfoliant, though we may also include colloidal oats or other botanical or mineral powders for extra exfoliation. These ingredients are held together with plant oils, butters, and waxes, which when cooled create a solid product. This product can be used in the same way as traditional loose scrubs. A small amount of solubilizer (surfactant)is necessary to wash away the oils included in the product, and prevent dangerous oil slicks in your shower tub. We select solubilizers that are natural or like-natural product. Colorants and fragrances are the primary artificial ingredients. Our colorants are "like natural" micas, but are made in a laboratory. Our final formulation is more than 95% natural.
Soaks differ from scrubs in that they are dissolved in water to offer a relaxing soak experience. Our solid soaks contain salts, sodium bicarbonate, citric acid, glycerin, and plant oils. These ingredients provide minerals that can be absorbed into the skin for nourishment. Oils and glycerin provide moisturizing and skin conditioning benefits. A small amount of solubilizer (surfactant) is included to prevent dangerous oil slicks in your shower tub. We natural or like-natural solubilizers for this use. Due to the lack of water included in this formula, preservatives are not required. Colors and fragrance oils are the primary artificial ingredient. We use "like natural" micas for color, but these are made in a laboratory. The final product is more than 95% natural.
Lip Products We offer lip balm and lip scrub as some of our product arsenal. These products are made from plant butters and oils, plus waxes to offer hardness. Oils and butters are selected for specific properties, such as emolliency or hydration. Colorants are not used in these products. Flavors are provided by both natural and artificial flavor oils, but even with the inclusion of artificial flavors, these products are over 95% natural. Currently these products are packaged in plastic, but we are switching over to a biodegradable, oil-resistant paperboard packaging. This will make our product more environmentally friendly, and reduce plastic waste in our world.
Masks Previously we have used traditional formulary for our facial and body masks, but at this time we are experimenting with creating a solid product to go along with our business model, vision, and goals. While supplies last, we will make our traditional formula on an as-requested basis.
Our masks are made from natural clays, plant oils and extracts, and other ingredients as needed. The benefit of a solid product is we can use biodegradable packaging. Solid product also does not require a preservative, since it contains no water, nor emulsifying ingredients since we are not mixing water with oils. The colors in these products are natural, from the clay or botanical powders. Fragrances are also natural, and come from essential oils. A small amount of solubilizer (surfactant) is necessary to wash away the oils included in the product, and prevent dangerous oil slicks in your shower tub. We select solubilizers that are natural or like-natural product, which gives a final formulation that is at least 95% natural.
