Our farm began as a means to become more self sufficient and self reliant. Displeased with the tediousness of city life, we wanted to be closer to nature. We started with a small flock of chickens and a garden, so we could produce our own eggs and vegetables. Then we added a dairy goat, to produce our own milk and start making cheese and yogurt. Next came turkeys and ducks, then meat goats, and finally pigs. Our farm will continue to develop and grow, but for now we are producing food for ourselves, while manufacturing product to fund our endeavors.
At this time we make and sell goat milk soap, lotion and other cosmetics, as well as handmade blankets and accessories. We do not sell food, but we are considering starting a goat share or pig share program in the future. This would be similar to a cow share, where you buy the animal, and pick up the meat from a butcher. This program is only the development stages, so check back for updates!
Philosophies and Ethics
At Violet Horizons, we focus on humane, ethical, and ecologically sustainable and renewable practices. We focus on practice and theory-based knowledge, using both industry standards as well as science-backed literature to develop our formulas and production standards. The ingredients we use must be scientifically proven safe for use, as well as legally approved for use in the given application.
Ethics and humane care are of utmost important to us. We provide to our animals with proper and humane care, providing proper nutrition and allowing them to express natural behaviors. Our research is constant to stay up to day with the latest information available. Overall well being is a holistic goal, not based on single factors. Annual veterinary inspections are included in our procedures to ensure everyone is healthy and our facilities are up to standard.
We also focus on ecologically sustainable and renewable practices. Many industries produce a large amount of waste which ultimately means harm to the world we live in. To help combat this, we are working to reduce or even eliminate our plastic waste. Our products are formulated as solid products that do not require plastic packaging. Instead we use biodegradable, renewable packing options. We also purchase our ingredients from renewable sources that also follow fair trade practices. It is everyone's responsibility to care for the world we live in, and we are doing everything we can to fulfill our small part.
Our Team
Nicole Nicole is the primary driving force behind this operation. She heads up the majority of animal care, and is the formulator of the products offered through our business. As a former wildlife biologist, Nicole has a lot of background experience and knowledge about the natural world and how everything fits together. At this time Nicole works at a veterinary clinic as a veterinary assistant while training to become a registered veterinary technician. This experience and additional knowledge is also applied to the farm to provide gold standard care to all the animals.
Andrew Although Nicole may be the primary force, Andrew is not to be forgotten! He is an enormous help in all operations, and learns something about every step of production. His primary crafts include construction, furniture repair and refinishing, as well as dabbling in crafts and exploring candle making. As a veteran and former National Guardsman, Andrew has real world experience to use on the farm and in life in general. He's worked for construction and truck building companies, as well as retail grocery stores and currently works in the financial sector.
